Plant of Health – Top 12 Tips for a Beautiful Eco Friendly Garden

  1. Understand that the soil is a living thing and once you have achieved a soil active in microbial and earthworm activity you can virtually grow any plant suited to that area.
  2. Plants generally like water and nutrient passing their roots so ensure you soil is well drained. If hard clay type soil then use a light application of gypsum, plenty of mulch and keep moist to encourage the earthworms to break the soil up. You will be surprised how soon it happens. Raise the garden beds with topsoil to improve drainage if necessary.
  3. Healthy soil equates to healthy plants, healthy animals and healthy humans. Before applying anything to the plants or soil find out if it is detrimental to the microbes and earthworms.
  4. Always combine soluble and slow release fertilisers for maximum results. Slow release fertilisers provide long term nutrients while foliar fertilisers provide instant uptake and nutrition to give plants a boost when they need it the most. Understand that products like Organic based fertiliser, fish, silica, calcium and seaweed are essential for optimum soil health and should be included on a regular basis.
  5. As the soil is a web of things like beneficial bacteria, fungi, microbes insects and creatures plants will give away up to 30% of their energy through their roots to feed these beings. The plants need these systems to breakdown nutrients to intern feed the plant. We must ensure that we do not suppress these systems with chemical fertilisers, pesticides and fungicides.
  6. Choose organic based slow release fertilisers like Organic Link that include the things you know are good for the soil like blood & bone, fish meal, soft rock phosphorus and potash.
  7. Use fish, verimcast, kelp foliar fertilisers regularly to feed the plants and the microbial systems in the soil. The microbes break down the nutrients and minerals in the soil to feed the plants.
  8. Understand that more than 17 minerals and trace elements are required for adequate cellular nutrition in plants. The best natural source is seaweed based products. Include Liquid Seaweed and Silica foliar spray on a regular basis.
  9. Mulch, Mulch, Mulch! There are many many benefits of mulch from water retention to weed suppression and is the key to healthy soil. Apply 100 cms of Mulch twice a year. Generally do not have more that 75% of one thing in the mulch ie Mix leaves, vegetable scraps with your grass clippings. Mix any organic matter and compost if practical. Call your local tree lopper if doing large areas.
  10. Always consider non-toxic pest management options before resorting to chemicals. Insect attack is usually a symptom of a stressed plant, try using Plant Care to assist with plant health.
  11. Prevention is better that cure, always include a regular spray of Neem to your plants, mixed with Triple Boost foliar fertiliser for best results. Neem in Organic Link slow release is excellent as well.
  12. Recognise that it may take months and, in the case of farmers, sometimes years for soils to return to a state of balance. Give your eco friendly approach time to “kick in” and you will be rewarded by strong healthy, disease free plants that will withstand pests, droughts and harvesting.
